It's the time of the year again, namely it is December 2013, and so we shall now refresh our Community Promotion Ads for the new year.

What are Community Promotion Ads?

Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar. The purpose of this question is the vetting process. Images of the advertisements are provided, and community voting will enable the advertisements to be shown.

Why do we have Community Promotion Ads?

This is a method for the community to control what gets promoted to visitors on the site. For example, you might promote the following things:

  • the site's twitter account
  • useful tools or resources for physics research
  • interesting articles or findings for the curious
  • cool events or conferences
  • anything else your community would genuinely be interested in

The goal is for future visitors to find out about the stuff your community deems important. This also serves as a way to promote information and resources that are relevant to your own community's interests, both for those already in the community and those yet to join.

Why do we reset the ads every year?

Some services will maintain usefulness over the years, while other things will wane to allow for new faces to show up. Resetting the ads every year helps accommodate this, and allows old ads that have served their purpose to be cycled out for fresher ads for newer things. This helps keep the material in the ads relevant to not just the subject matter of the community, but to the current status of the community. We reset the ads once a year, every December.

The community promotion ads have no restrictions against reposting an ad from a previous cycle. If a particular service or ad is very valuable to the community and will continue to be so, it is a good idea to repost it. It may be helpful to give it a new face in the process, so as to prevent the imagery of the ad from getting stale after a year of exposure.

How does it work?

The answers you post to this question must conform to the following rules, or they will be ignored.

  1. All answers should be in the exact form of:

    Please do not add anything else to the body of the post. If you want to discuss something, do it in the comments.

  2. The question must always be tagged with the magic tag. In addition to enabling the functionality of the advertisements, this tag also pre-fills the answer form with the above required form.

Image requirements

  • The image that you create must be 220 x 250 pixels
  • Must be hosted through our standard image uploader (imgur)
  • Must be GIF or PNG
  • No animated GIFs
  • Absolute limit on file size of 150 KB

Score Threshold

There is a minimum score threshold an answer must meet (currently 6) before it will be shown on the main site.

    $\begingroup$ Yes, they're still active, and will still be active until December when the next thread goes up. You can propose an ad for a proposal but I'm not the person who you'll need the approval of - it'll be your peers who will decide by voting whether or not they'll have the ad fly. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ “Nuclei and electrons ⇒ chemistry” is a blatant overgeneralization. There are some question involving atomic orbitals (such as magnetic moment of an atom) that are exclusively physical. I also can point to a physical question about π bond. $\endgroup$

The arXiv does not normally push for researchers to upload, but I think this is innocuous enough. It is actually primarily aimed at non-researchers, to help bring home the message that the arXiv does have a huge chunk of the world's physics papers in it. $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ I must say that I feel they responded very badly to the accusations of phishing on this thread (some comments now deleted). I am also not happy that, for a site that would like to be considered as a professional forum, their users list shows me as an active user and therefore makes it look as though I endorse it regardless of whether I do or not. (I also wonder what e.g. Gil Kalai thinks about that.) It is not clear from the outside what the formal moderation is but there are a few big red lights for me. $\endgroup$

Personally, I was rather appaled about the moderators reluctance (it took them about a week to delete the very inappropriate meta post) in dealing appropriately with the throwing around of very bad (including statements about criminal intentions) accusations of a particular user in the course of the "Phishing Affair". Happily this bad episode is now over... If you read the user profiles you can clearly see who is active and who is not, and when looking at the posts and comments you can discern the imported ones by the attribution line. Peace now... $\endgroup$

(e.g. Explore → Reviews tab → Active tab produces an empty page - presumably not quite the desired behaviour?) Do you have a log with a description of what's running and what's not?     $\begingroup$ @CrazyBuddy A number of people have been quite disappointed with the behavior of the site-specific Twitter feeds (like this one). They seem to more or less randomly choose questions to tweet and thus a lot of relatively bad content winds up getting shared. (But of course you can make your own judgment about this) $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ The new image is even worse and it does not comply with the size requirements. Think about why you think this is relevant and build on that. If you provide a good mock-up made e.g. in MS Paint, I may have time to make a pretty version. Have a look at the other ads: they all say pretty much right away why you should click on them with the possible exception of the two space.se ads, which are graphically strong enough to stand on their own. $\endgroup$
