N.B.

The size requirements for adverts have changed. It is NOT appropriate to simply copy over the images from previous years - they won't work. Images need to be 300×250px or 600×500px for retina displays, up from 220×250px in previous years. If an image is taller than it is wide, it's the wrong size.

It's 2016 now, and we've made some changes to the sidebar size. As such, we can now restart the Community Promotion Ads for 2016!

Keep in mind, we have updated some of the guidelines compared to previously - the changes are marked in bold in the Image Requirements section.

What are Community Promotion Ads?

Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements that will show up on the main site, in the right sidebar. The purpose of this question is the vetting process. Images of the advertisements are provided, and community voting will enable the advertisements to be shown.

Why do we have Community Promotion Ads?

This is a method for the community to control what gets promoted to visitors on the site. For example, you might promote the following things:

  • the site's twitter account
  • useful tools or resources for physics research
  • interesting articles or findings for the curious
  • cool events or conferences
  • anything else your community would genuinely be interested in

The goal is for future visitors to find out about the stuff your community deems important. This also serves as a way to promote information and resources that are relevant to your own community's interests, both for those already in the community and those yet to join.

Why do we reset the ads every year?

Some services will maintain usefulness over the years, while other things will wane to allow for new faces to show up. Resetting the ads every year helps accommodate this, and allows old ads that have served their purpose to be cycled out for fresher ads for newer things. This helps keep the material in the ads relevant to not just the subject matter of the community, but to the current status of the community. We reset the ads once a year, every December.

The community promotion ads have no restrictions against reposting an ad from a previous cycle. If a particular service or ad is very valuable to the community and will continue to be so, it is a good idea to repost it. It may be helpful to give it a new face in the process, so as to prevent the imagery of the ad from getting stale after a year of exposure.

How does it work?

The answers you post to this question must conform to the following rules, or they will be ignored.

  1. All answers should be in the exact form of:

    [![Tagline to show on mouseover][1]][2]

       [1]: http://image-url
       [2]: http://clickthrough-url

Please do not add anything else to the body of the post. If you want to discuss something, do it in the comments.

  2. The question must always be tagged with the magic tag. In addition to enabling the functionality of the advertisements, this tag also pre-fills the answer form with the above required form.

Image requirements

  • The image that you create must be 300 x 250 pixels, or double that if high DPI.
  • Must be hosted through our standard image uploader (imgur)
  • Must be GIF or PNG
  • No animated GIFs
  • Absolute limit on file size of 150 KB
  • If the background of the image is white or partially white, there must be a 1px border (2px if high DPI) surrounding it.

Score Threshold

There is a minimum score threshold an answer must meet (currently 6) before it will be shown on the main site.

You can check out the ads that have met the threshold with basic click stats here.

$\begingroup$ @Emilio We're delaying the activation some bit to allow for sites that have lots of ads from the old width but haven't updated the widths to match yet. We're probably looking at some time February for that, but if we see a lot of ads being submitted at the new width then we'll push it sooner. $\endgroup$

$\begingroup$ I don't see the chat event scheduled, though (i.e. the link is essentially empty at present). The chat event should also turn up on the sticky yellow thing at top right of the homepage when it gets scheduled. $\endgroup$ May 21, 2016 at 20:57
  • $\begingroup$ hi all for those not aware we had a long conversation on this topic in the physics chat room recently re coordination etc., see transcript; mod David Z has graciously agreed to allow the current recurring chat mtg for a special guest on special occasions & put link on home pg after arranged. DS has not yet committed to a mtg time/ date, we want to build up interest/ attn (asking for help on that from everyone) eg with this approved ad & otherwise. plz direct further questions/ coordination to me in chat room eg chat ping me, will respond there. we also need volunteers for the speaker! :) $\endgroup$

$\begingroup$ In that case the advert as posed will act negatively in that regard. Once the advert goes live it needs to click through to somewhere that actually describes what you're talking about (instead of the current schedule for the generic chat meeting). If for whatever reason you can't / don't want to schedule a specific chat event, then you should make a new thread on meta explaining the idea, with a (maintained) answer with the current schedule (including dates as TBD if necessary). $\endgroup$ May 23, 2016 at 17:49
  • 2
$\begingroup$ Also, vague references to "see transcript" are essentially useless. If you want to reference chat, do it properly and link to the appropriate part of the transcript incl. date & time. $\endgroup$ May 23, 2016 at 17:51
  • 3
$\begingroup$ Another point - if you want this to be anything like a sustainable series (beginning with having more than one of them) then you need to get your chops up on recruiting speakers. That starts with describing what would be required of them and what 'AMA' is to a general (non-reddit-aware) audience. If you're looking for speakers you need to be proactive about it. $\endgroup$ May 23, 2016 at 17:55
  • $\begingroup$ @Emilio you seem to have a lot of ideas how to pull this off. dont think this ad comment section is the place to discuss it. plz ping me in chat & will answer your objections there $\endgroup$

$\begingroup$ @vzn Nah, not really. Just saying: if you don't do this properly, even this ad as currently posed is not really appropriate. $\endgroup$ May 23, 2016 at 20:09
  • $\begingroup$ @Emilio not appreciating your 1sided words/ resistance/ critique on "how to do this properly" or what is an "appropriate ad" & no response in the chat room. there was a lot of discussion/ coordination already in the site chat room with the 1st guest and site mod DZ & its easy to find with search. the guest speaker concept is DZs idea in a site chat mtg etc :( $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ Sorry for being brusque - don't really have the time. I'd like to see this go forward but cannot at present contribute. Just don't put a live ad that links to an empty location (as it is at present). $\endgroup$ May 23, 2016 at 21:14
  • $\begingroup$ you do have the time to challenge it openly, but apparently not to help push it fwd. :( its not an "empty location". we cant get new ads approved for every guest, its unrealistic/ difficult, so both DS/ DZ suggested/ are ok with a generic ad. the ad cant point to a guest that has agreed in principle but hasnt committed to a time yet. the current ad doubles as pointing to the chat room/ recurring mtg, and announcing a guest speaker plan. the ad can be easily revised with a new link & same graphics when possible. $\endgroup$
